Bryn Du art show captivates with variety, quality

GRANVILLE -- A black bird sits on top of a rock-like object floating above a naked woman lying on her side. The background is two soft colored fields -- the upper bluish like the sky, the lower white like sand.
Viewing Young T. Lee's painting, on exhibit at the Bryn Du Show, Pam Wilson said she liked the contrast of smooth and rough surfaces. But she said she felt uneasy about what looked like a rock hanging above the woman.
"I wanted her to be safe and grounded," the Granville resident said.
The crowd that jammed the Bryn Du Mansion for the show's opening Wednesday was treated to a variety of works by artists from Licking and surrounding counties.
"The breadth of work captivated people," co-curator Jane Heller said.
Although paintings were the dominant form, there also were several sculptures and fabric pieces, as well as a video and a work of book art.
An intriguing maze of knobs, metal fixtures and buttons mounted on pieces of fabric, Lyn Logan Grimes' mixed media piece "Soulicious" is engaging and arresting. A bald eagle carved by Chris Ford, its head turned to one side as if listening for prey, is exquisite in the detail of head and body.
Experiencing the Bryn Du Show for the first time, Val Matula said he was surprised by the quality of the work and the variety.
"It is less abstract than the exhibition at the Ohio State Fair," the Granville Township resident said. "I enjoy this more."
For artists such as Judy Doyle, the show is an opportunity to share their work with the public and, for some, to make sales.
Doyle, who has exhibited in past Bryn Du shows, showed watercolor paintings, including "Resting," a piece based on her visit to a swamp in South Carolina. The almost transparent rendering of tree trunks lining the swamp and herons flying over it gives a light and airy feeling to the canvas.
"I try to get a mood, a special feeling for the beauty of the place," the Granville resident said.
